Abstract
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew articulates three values fundamental to our understanding of canon law: the value of historic canonical principles for ecclesiology; the value as an exercise in ecumenical collaboration of comparing laws of different ecclesial traditions worldwide and inducing from them common principles of law; and the value of an articulation of common principles of Christian law to correct the historic deficit in the ecumenical enterprise, which traditionally has neglected the potential of church law as a unifying force for global Christianity. This chapter explores these noble, important and practical values in the context of: the historic uses of principles of church law in Christian traditions beyond Eastern Orthodoxy; the work of the Ecumenical Panel on shared principles of church law; and its Statement of Principles of Christian Law (2016) which was launched at a workshop at the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches held in Germany, 2022.
