Abstract
This chapter asserts that understanding the gendered power of the gold digger stereotype is a vital, yet often overlooked consideration when exploring constructions of entitlement to family property. Factors such as class, wealth and gender all can individually impact the distribution of such property. But when someone is accused of being a gold digger, that person can endure a triple blow of discrimination on these fronts. The stereotypical gold digger is female and is seeking to form relationships with men who are wealthier or potentially in a different social class. Yet this stereotype has been weaponised in powerful way against all women. As this chapter shows, this often creates false perceptions about the law, could influence how couples manage and control money in relationships, and may even undermine women’s entitlement to property on divorce.
