Williams Chapter First Online: 03 November 2023 153 Accesses 6 Altmetric Part of the International Political Theory book series (IPoT) Abstract The importance and influence of St Augustine’s thought on international politics is here approached from the perspective of his ideas on human nature. A historical analysis is provided of how Augustine’s ideas developed during the Pelagian controversy, emphasizing the alleged total depravity of our character in contrast with Pelagius’s more optimistic views. The key political ideas that issue from the starting point of total depravity are then explored in his work, and their influence explored in the case of twentieth century thinkers. Specifically, Hans Morgenthau’s Classical Realism is presented as a canonic example of the Augustinian legacy, with the work of Michael Oakeshott being deployed to extrapolate these links. The chapter encourages a critical perspective towards this legacy; the authority of the Augustinian view of human nature and ideas of politics that issue from it are challenged, through revealing how this truth was constructed.
