Abstract

This article draws on a series of neglected Chancery cases to cast new light on the publication of the first widely affordable Welsh Bible in 1630. Using this Chancery material and much other new evidence, the article reconstructs the syndicate which sponsored the Bible’s production. In addition, the discussion traces important evidence about the text’s distribution and runs to ground some of the personalities involved. The piece argues that the 1630 Bible’s origins and the dynamics of its dissemination link it to a network of London puritans connected to Wales and the Marches. This network affords a more radical context for the 1630 volume’s production than has been hitherto recognised. The article also argues that the 1630 Bible was part of a larger vernacular Welsh publishing initiative which operated between 1629 and 1632, elements of which can be connected to the sponsors of the 1630 text. The discussion also considers the legal and logistical complications occasioned by the death of the Bible’s principal sponsors in the early 1630s and suggests that these difficulties retarded the text’s impact and impeded its dissemination.
