Abstract
The presentation introduces a novel theoretical framework to re-conceptualise sustainability and heritage. Within this framework, sustainability is understood as an assemblage of sustained relationships and actors. This framework characterises a sustainable world as inherently multi-deterministic, interdisciplinary, and constantly dynamic. It also informs the necessity for an inclusive, democratic, and anticipatory decision-making process to allow dissonance and contestation. Initially informed and applied in heritage research, this framework is conceptually versatile to investigate heritage’s potential broader contribution to a more just, inclusive, and sustainable society through the agency and emergence of a sustained heritage assemblage.
