Abstract

Retraction and protection of the tongue when operating in the oral cavity, and particularly around the mandible, can be difficult. It is normally done by the assistant, but it occupies their attention and limits them to having only one hand free to assist the operator. We have used 3 instruments commonly found in operating theatres to provide mouth opening and self-retaining retraction of the tongue.
