Abstract

Violence and fear of violence affect families, communities and individuals of all ages and genders. For example, half of all teenagers in England and Wales witnessed or were victims of violence in the 12 months up to November 20231 . One in four teenagers either perpetrated or were the victims of violence and 70% of violence among teenagers resulted in physical injury, an estimated 360,000 13 to 17-year-old children in England and Wales1 . The prevalence of violent victimisation among teenagers varies significantly across England and Wales, affecting a quarter of children in London and one in ten in the southeast of England, for example. One in five children report staying away from school in the previous 12 months because of their fear of violence
