Abstract
The fault tolerant operation of the cascaded three-level neutral-point-clamped converter (C3L-NPC) is investigated in the paper. In the presence of fault conditions of submodules (SMs), the dc side of the fault SM is bypassed to ensure the continuous operation of system. The bypass operation is achieved by controlling the IGBT device on an additional circuit to smoothly discharge the dc capacitor. This scheme makes the bypass operation controllable, thereby effectively suppressing the discharge current of the dc capacitor. To achieve this, a buck-boost bypass circuit is added in the dc side, so the discharge current can be controlled through a current controller. The effectiveness of the presented method has been verified through simulation in PLECS. Results show that the fault SMs can be smoothly and safely bypassed by the IGBTs without exceeding the maximum current and junction temperature.
