Abstract
This chapter considers the challenge of maintaining workforce capacity in health care. It draws on the idea of anchor organisations; as major employers, these organisations can improve communities through the provision of good-quality jobs. In return, recruiting employees from all sectors of a community creates a diverse workforce, giving voice to these communities and ultimately improving patient care. Retention and recruitment are inextricably linked; the chapter highlights how high workload and low pay are significant drivers of turnover, but their impact may be diminished through improved opportunities for autonomy, belonging and contribution that are relevant for roles across organisational levels. Inclusive recruitment practices and selection methods designed to minimise bias will increase access to employment for disadvantaged groups and broaden the pool of potential employees. Through adopting these measures, anchor organisations may build strong links with local communities. The chapter concludes by suggesting areas for further research.
