Abstract
The extreme volatility of Bitcoin prices in recent years has raised questions about the underlying drivers of this behaviour and whether Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme. This chapter discusses the role of gambling preference that partially explains the large price swings in cryptocurrency markets. We analyse the properties of crypto assets that are attractive to gamblers and speculators to these markets, and discuss the challenging issues of crypto addiction and cryptocurrency-related financial crimes, and their implications for investors and regulators.
