Abstract

Dental photography is primarily concerned with the imaging of the teeth and oral cavity. In some instances, photography of the whole head is required, such as for orthodontic procedures. The photographer's role is to record the diseases and conditions of the mouth for monitoring, teaching and research. In both the hospital setting and private practice there may be the need to make an initial recording of the patient's condition before work commences to create a legal record and thus provide some defense against litigation. Imaging throughout the treatment of the patient is also beneficial, for both clinical and legal reasons. In private practice, the dentist may also consider the use of photography to produce images, not for clinical purposes but to advertise their services.
