Abstract
One of the key-stage of a good insulator design is to test their performances under artificial pollution tests based (or not) on field monitoring. According to IEC 60-507, two methods are recommended for the clean fog test: (i) Method 1 is to apply to the insulator a reduced voltage under fog conditions until the leakage resistance drops to a minimum. At this moment, the full voltage ramp is applied until flashover (FOV). (ii) Method 2 is to apply the full voltage and after applying the fog, and waiting for a maximum of one hour for the occurrence or not of flashover. This paper deals with the comparison of both methods for selecting the adequate one in order to be much closer to the field conditions, especially for the design of leakage current monitoring. Three insulators were used: silicone rubber with 4 small sheds, silicone rubber with 4 large sheds, and EPDM with 5 alternate sheds. The results show that (i) FOV voltages of method 2 are lower than method 1 whatever the type of insulator, (ii) Dry bands dynamic and discharges activity, leakage current, leakage resistance, and average power are closely linked to the used method.
