Abstract

This IoT Lab Book with Packet Tracer is designed to help both undergraduate and postgraduate students bridge the gap between virtual and physical IoT environments, complementing the foundational IoT Lab Book’s focus on end-to-end system development. By integrating real-world hardware, such as Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, and microcontrollers, with the simulated ecosystem of Cisco Packet Tracer, learners can overcome practical constraints—like limited sensor availability—while still gaining hands-on experience. Through protocols such as HTTP, students are able to exchange data and commands between physical devices and virtual counterparts, enabling more robust and scalable IoT solutions. Packet Tracer’s flexibility further supports the creation of custom virtual sensors and actuators, expanding the range of possible scenarios beyond what may be feasible with physical hardware alone. These features make it possible to model and test complex system designs, fostering innovative approaches to problem-solving in IoT. In contrast to the Advanced Lab Book—which concentrates on Cisco Packet Tracer as an independent tool—this Lab Book focuses on hybrid implementations. It provides a series of targeted exercises that guide learners in seamlessly connecting virtual and physical domains, offering a holistic understanding of IoT system design that merges conceptual rigor with applied technical skills.
