Abstract
My research on Gandhāran art began with a simple question: where are the nuns in Gandhāra? This has since opened an interesting yet complex research path on gender. However, this question cannot be sufficiently answered at this stage as new data continue to emerge. In recent decades, this new data has been in the form of texts, notably manuscripts and inscriptions, which have greatly contributed to our understanding of social, religious, and political aspects of Gandhāran Buddhism. While a comprehensive answer to my question is not possible, my modest goal at present is to bring together the available data from the region as an invitation for further research on bhikṣuṇīs (nuns) in Gandhāra.
