Abstract
This chapter considers what climate and environmental crisis means for praxis in field research, focussing specifically on the need to reduce aviation emissions from fieldwork travel. This is, first and foremost, an issue of research ethics. It is also an issue that cannot be disentangled from other calls for change facing research, including decolonisation, because of the way greenhouse gas emissions reflect and reinforce socio-environmental injustices. After outlining the core debates on this topic, the chapter suggests some practical steps for reducing fieldwork emissions. While much of the debate so far has focussed on the individual decision-making of researchers, the chapter contends that such actions are meaningless if they are not accompanied by structural and cultural change, which must be led by institutions and organisations.
