Abstract

This chapter will provide an overview of how ecological restoration and rewilding have been conceptualised and discussed within the environmental philosophy literature, before turning to consider the various ways in which restoration and rewilding intersect with aesthetics, through a review of pertinent literature. In particular, the chapter will focus on (i) how ecological restoration has been likened to the restoration of art works, which has brought about critical discussions over the “authenticity” of restoration actions; (ii) debates about the appropriate role of the arts in depicting future restoration scenarios and artistic engagements with restoration projects; (iii) the role of aesthetic values and characteristics in setting ecological restoration and rewilding goals and objectives; and (iv) the aesthetic outcomes of ecological restoration and rewilding activities, including the potential for such activities to bring about negative or challenging multi-sensory aesthetic experiences of nature. The chapter will ultimately demonstrate that environmental aesthetics plays a significant role in ecological restoration and rewilding discourses and practices and that this has implications for the development of relationships between people and nature.
