Abstract
Some years ago, I was an undergraduate student learning about matters of criminal justice and policing. During this time, the amorphous concept of police suspicion and its relationship with the structuring of low-visibility police discretion caught my attention, generating an intense desire to further my knowledge in this exciting, discrete area of police cultural practice. Years later, my desire to develop a further understanding of this topic is equally enthused by Police Suspicion: Proactive Policing in London, 1780-1850, wherein Bland provides a comprehensive, contextual examination of operational policing, culture, and practice and its implications for arrest and prosecution throughout a seventy-year period in London, between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
