Abstract
Transatlantic slavery was historically specific and unprecedented in numerous ways which set it apart from other instances of slavery. The era of the transatlantic slave trade and plantation slavery encompassed more than four centuries, four continents and very numerous peoples and states. Though an eminently international phenomenon, the academic literature addressing slavery largely transcends the bounds of the International Relations (IR) discipline. This entry provides an overview of the literature about slavery within and beyond IR, from the early twentieth century to current debates.
