Abstract
Traditional risk communication research focuses on the science of making numbers meaningful, i.e. effective ‘message transmission’. Interactional perspectives address the art of risk communication - making ‘meaningful pictures’ for people to use risk information in their everyday lives Interactional perspectives may help us understand when, for whom, and why different communication styles, formats and content may be more or less effective. But should we have made more progress in over 20 years of risk communication research and polemic? We need to accelerate progress by integrating evidence into existing training on shared decision-making where there is a stronger evidence base.
