Abstract

The United Kingdom has committed to reducing carbon emissions of the building sector. The transition towards low and zero carbon projects requires the understanding of regulations and the development of new skills. The collaboration and integration of multidisciplinary work is critical to achieving the mandated carbon reduction targets. The design process and communication flow in practices should keep up with legislation, guidance and advances related to low carbon technologies to comply with the regulations. It is argued that the social patterns of practice are likely to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and regulation compliance. However, the way official guidance and legislation fit into the delivery process is uncertain. This paper reports on the interactions of design team members and discusses the mechanisms that contribute to a better understanding and application of legislation and guidance to low carbon buildings. It aims to identify how official requirements and guidelines are used within the natural flow of practice and how they inform the process. This early research will present preliminary findings of a small number of case studies where the design process and communication flow are explored to discover the means by which practitioners develop low carbon projects.
