Abstract

This chapter examines the intersections between autism, identity, and anorexia nervosa (AN). Autistic individuals are overrepresented in AN populations, and identity-related factors such as camouflaging, sensory sensitivities, and difficulties with emotional communication are explored as possible mechanisms. The chapter highlights how autistic people may use anorexic behaviours to manage overwhelming experiences or social expectations. It argues for neurodiversity-informed approaches that support the development of authentic autistic identities, reduce camouflaging, and recognise the distinct challenges faced by this group in treatment and recovery.
