Abstract

This article compares four minoritised linguistic spheres and the strategies of the public sector on promoting digital content in Catalan, Basque, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic. Based on expert interviews with public service media managers as well as policymakers in language departments of regional governments, the authors concentrate on analysing the objectives pursued in relation to digital content creators. A particular focus is placed on content for young people, and actions the stakeholders have taken to reach them. This concerns the public service broadcasters in each sphere – CCMA, EITB, S4C and BBC Alba –, but also other actors the language planning departments have engaged with. We first address literature on minority language media and public service media – including past research in the four contexts. The methodology is then detailed, discussing the justification for each chosen interviewee. Finally, we present results from the interviews and discuss how this may inform future public policy recommendations.
