Abstract

Identity is playing a key role in the ways, times and modes by which people navigate and negotiate the cities that they live in. Age, gender, socio-economic position, and caste, to name a few, impact people’s decisions on when and how they move. This editorial offers some insights into contemporary mobility trends and intersectional identities before discussing the key contributions of the Special Issue, showing how new and innovative methods have offered new insights into how planning decisions are made, the relationships between care, gender and the city; the role of masculinity in immobilising young men. As well as the use of assemblage theory to demonstrate the relationship between care and the materialities of cities and the complexities of youth, waithood and citizenship. These studies foreground the importance of identity in how people move and reinforce the need for more studies in this area to gain greater understanding of how, why and where people move or don’t and the day to day experiences of the cities in which they live.
