The ‘Annedd’ project is an innovative, if not entirely new building type necessitated by the growing demand for elderly housing with ranging levels of care. The design was predicated on the development of a new model for elderly integrated care in Wales, carried out with Grwp Gwalia and University of Glamorgan. Located in rural Carmarthenshire, the project is influenced by topography, orientation, organizational demands, and response to cultural heritage. The distinctive geometric patterns, colours and dimensional rules governing the local craft of traditional quilt making, are reflected in the spatial composition of building and landscape. The simple form sits in the sloping landscape as a linear spine block housing support and day centre facilities, with protruding fingers of residential accommodation. Landscape between is terraced following the quilt pattern applied across the whole site, and will be left as wildflower meadow so that residents can embrace the domestic and the familiar.
