Abstract
This chapter aims to outline the role of cognitive testing as an outcome measure in evaluating treatments for dementia, with a particular emphasis on neural transplantation strategies. It begins with a brief overview of issues in the diagnosis of dementia. It then reviews the desirable characteristics of instruments for evaluating dementia treatments, followed by a discussion of one particular battery: that is used in the CAPIT-HD neural transplantation programme, in order to demonstrate the application of the principles of cognitive assessment to a clinical research setting.
