Identifying CUDSS Submm sources [Abstract]. Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society 31 (5) , p. 1404. |
Abstract
The Canada-UK Deep SCUBA Survey (CUDSS) is the largest area deep submm survey being carried out with the SCUBA bolometer camera at the JCMT. To date we have discovered about 50 submm sources down to a flux limit of about 3mJy. The nature of faint submm sources, both in our own and other deep submm surveys, is still unclear. Identifications at other wavelengths are crucially important to understanding these sources. We have thus conducted deep near-IR imaging with UKIRT to identify CUDSS sources not identified in existing CFRS optical data. We find that a number of submm sources are identified with very red objects, but others remain unidientified even in deep near-IR images. We discuss the implications of these results for our understanding of this population and its role in the cosmic infrared background.
