Abstract
This book is a bilingual edition (Latin-German) of Augustine's work De vera religione, 'On True Religion'. It opens with a comprehensive introduction with chapters on the place of the work in Augustine's life and oeuvre, its structure and outline, its major themes, possible sources, the role of Manichaeism and Platonism in it, its philosophical themes (e. g. the constitution and structure of the self), its approach to Biblical exegesis and its practical outlook. It provides a critical Latin text with apparatus based on the only two modern critical editions and revised in several places. The Latin text is faced with a German translation. This is the first translation into a modern language which is based on a modern critical edition. It is accompanied by extensive notes on points of language, style, history, prosopography, religion and theology. There is an appendix containing the first edition of a translation of part of the work into Byzantine Greek by Prochoros Kydones in the mid-fourteenth century, also with extensive notes. Textual points that arose from the study of the Greek text have also been discussed in the introduction. The volume concludes with a bibliography, several indices, including Latin and Greek key words.
