Abstract

This paper describes the first steps towards an integrated two-stage method for global layup optimization of composite prismatic panels with initial buckling constraints. The first stage extends an established panel design code, which uses exact strip buckling analysis and permits the optimization of stiffened panels of arbitrary cross-section, by introducing lamination parameters as design variables. The second stage optimizes the layup of each component plate, using a logic-based branch-and-bound solver to match the optimal values of the lamination parameters found in the first stage. The method is enhanced by solution strategies which can reduce the computation time by a factor of 1000 for the optimization of a 24-ply laminate.
