Abstract
This article looks at three crucial periods in the political evolution of Crete: the protopalatial (circa 1900-1700 BC), the post-palatial (circa 1300-1000 BC) and the late Archaic and Early Classical (600-400 BC). It looks at the double emergence of state-like polities in the first and last periods. Three key variables are considered and compared systematically: settlement size; commensality; and the uses of writing.
