Abstract

The article explores the history of accountants and accounting societies in Great Britain. In 1881, a year after the formation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, there were just 1,470 qualified accountants in Great Britain and Ireland. The fact that Britain has seven senior accounting societies is in contrast to many other countries who cope quite well with just one association.
