Abstract

Cancer is still a major health challenge in the UK. This paper describes an overview of an evolving clinical information system to follow the cancer patient pathway, in an attempt to contribute in providing the best quality of care for cancer patients in Wales. The project is carried out by the Department of Computer Science at Cardiff University in collaboration with Velindre NHS trust, the South East Wales cancer centre and the Cancer Services Information Framework. This paper investigates the author’s approach to design and implement different interfaces of the system to suit different user departments across the healthcare spectrum and demonstrate the real benefits provided to clinicians and managers by accessing this multi-provider’s electronic case note. Then it follows with a critical evaluation of the work done and finally draws conclusions and identifies the way forward.
