Abstract

The density profile in the near-surface region of Pb(110) is probed by synchrotron x-ray reflectivity measurements at temperatures just below the triple point. They reveal the presence of a thin surface layer of liquid-like density. The thickness of the quasiliquid layer is determined as well as the widths of the solid/quasiliquid and quasiliquid/vapour interfaces.
