Abstract

Hypodescent is the theory that assignment of race of a mixed-race person is to that of the subordinate race (hence, Barack Obama is reported as Black). Peery and Bodenhausen (2008 Psychological Science 19 373–377) demonstrated that such assignment occurs for Black/White morphed faces. In their study, however, the majority of participants were White, therefore the results are also consistent with exodescent: defined here as the assignment of race of a mixed-race person to the race of the parent who is most different to the observer. An experiment is reported that aimed to distinguish between these two concepts. Black, White and Black/White mixed-race faces were racially categorised by either Black or White participants. The mixed-race faces were consistently reported as belonging to the other race by both White and Black participants, hence, supporting the idea of exodescent. Attribution of race for mixed-race faces appears to be affected by familiarity with the racial groups rather than any biological or social hierarchy.
