Abstract

Despite the wealth of literature on e-marketplaces, research on electronic logistics and/or transport marketplaces, is scarce. Electronic Logistics Marketplace (ELM) refers to an electronic hub using web-based systems that link shippers and carriers together for the purpose of collaboration or trading. Via an international scoping study, our research aims to evaluate different types of ELM, establish the likely associated operational models and ELMs relationship with tailored logistics. Multiple case study approach is adopted with data has been collected from shippers, transport companies and the technology providers. The case studies involve interviews, data analysis and process mapping. The research reveals that the ELM business model is still at its infancy stage but with huge potential for growth in optimising supply chain networks, and enabling the provision of customised logistics.
