Abstract
By comparing a new 2.2-micron image of the high-redshift radiogalaxy 3C356 with optical and radio data, it is shown that the infrared/optical continuum and narrow emission lines arise from a compact region, of radius less than 5 kpc, 50 kpc from the radio-core and aligned with the radio axis. This region, although red (with R - K = 3.4), is not so red as the galaxy itself. None of the radiation mechanisms yet suggested for the extended infrared emission of 3C356 and another high-z radiogalaxy 3C368 is entirely satisfactory. The most plausible explanation is that the infrared emission is from a starburst triggered by the expanding radiosource.
