Abstract
Ocean freight logistics provides a vital foundation for contemporary international commerce. However, the viable provision of this service has become significantly more challenging in recent years as the global economy has become more depressed and volatile. What has compounded this issue is the fact that the degree of market turbulence is largely unprecedented in the history of the container liner shipping sector, which from its inception until 2007 had seen almost continual strong growth performance consistently above world GDP growth. The lower and more unpredictable cargo volumes in recent years have resulted in considerable economic stresses being exerted upon both freight rates and viable vessel utilisation rates, which therefore have impacted on revenues and posed new questions around operators’ business models. This paper focuses on this topical issue and examines, given total demand for international container freight movement is predominantly a derived demand from the state of the global economy, the capabilities of international liner shipping providers to deploy supply-side flexibility measures to cope in such business conditions.
