Abstract

The United Kingdom is experiencing a national shortage of midwives. This coupled with the increasing demand on maternity services as the birth rate rises and the number of women with complex social and physical care needs increases, has negatively affected the working environment. The result has been an increase in the number of midwives reporting stress, low morale, disillusionment and burnout and has led to many clinicians to consider leaving the midwifery profession. However, this is not always the case; many midwives choose to stay in the profession and are able to have long and fulfilling careers. In the face of adversity these midwives demonstrate professional resilience. Working alongside Prof Hunter a research project was conducted which aimed to understand the ways in which resilient midwives are able to positively adapt to adversity.
