Abstract
We argue that "Sociological Discrimination" (SD) constitutes a critical skill-set for science comprehension and the development of metacognitive knowledge. Seeking to provide a strong theoretical underpinning for this, and lending support to Priest's (2013) argument in favour of "scientific literacy" we discuss the theory of expertise (Collins and Evans, 2007) in greater detail to illustrate why a focus on SD skills rather than substantive science is important as part of a fruitful SciComms strategy.
