Abstract

In recent years, a more proactive, interventionist, and legalistic approach to intimate partner violence (IPV) has developed in many countries. This chapter discusses the challenges inherent in using criminal justice policies and practices to respond to IPV, as well as the difficulties in establishing the beneficial outcomes from such approaches – on victims, offenders and the wider community – through empirical research. Efforts to refine and improve criminal justice policies and practices need to continue alongside approaches that focus on prevention and involve whole systems in the response to IPV.
