Abstract
The Welsh Assembly Government has identified Health Gain Targets in five priority areas with the aim of improving health and reducing health inequalities in Wales. These areas are: coronary heart disease, cancer, mental health, the health of older people and the health of children. In order to identify indicators associated with the areas, a series of reviews were commissioned. The aim of this project was to carry out a systematic review of the social determinants for older people’s health in the UK and to develop social indicators from these determinants that could be monitored in the Welsh population. A secondary aim was to carry out a systematic review of the effectiveness of interventions designed to tackle these determinants.
