Abstract

Marine sediments cover 70% of the Earth’s surface, contain the largest reservoir of organic matter and significant fossil fuels. These sediments have recently been found to be a major microbial habitat to at least 1 km depth. Unique prokaryotic groups are present using ancient organic matter and geosphere energy sources.
