Abstract
Evidence for ancient breastfeeding is abundant but difficult to interpret. It relates mostly to the upper classes and to slaves, and more to breastfeeding by wet-nurses than by mothers. The extent of maternal breastfeeding must be assessed through comparative studies. Breastfeeding was the object of debates in antiquity.
