Abstract

When freshly manufactured components are first loaded together in operation, they tend to undergo an initial settling period which is commonly termed ‘running -in’, characterised by changes in the surface topography due to plastic deformation and mild wear and also chemical changes that may take place both in the lubricant and by tribo-film formation on the contacting surfaces. This investigation focusses on the geometric changes in the surface topography as this has the most immediate implications for the hydrodynamic performance of the interface.
