Abstract

This chapter, in a comprehensive volume about Pierre-Daniel Huet's (1630-1721) "Origeniana", the first modern study of the life and work of the early Greek Church Father Origen of Alexandria (185-254), offers a critical review of the biographical notes on Origen contained in the "Origeniana". It situates Huet's "Origeniana" in the context of Huet's entire work (1) and undertakes a critical analysis of the biographical notes in view of Huet's applied methodology and the outcomes of his research (2). It concludes that Huet's radically critical ('hyper-critical') approach represents a pioneering achievement among early modern biographical study. However, its 'hyper-criticism' also came at a cost in the sense that Huet never achieved a rounded biographical treatment of his subject. Though his notes proved exceedingly useful for later scholars, his "savage erudition" (as one scholar called it) was rejected by the 19th and 20th century and is only now beginning to be appreciated in its historical context.
