Abstract
British children’s fantasy literature, from Alice in Wonderland to Harry Potter, has had an important place in Japanese popular culture, and thus in Japanese perceptions of Britain. This chapter considers how Britain’s “storybook” qualities have made it a locus of fantasy tourism. I focus on the Cotswolds, which have become increasingly popular as a tourist destination, and specifically on the village of Castle Combe, which I identify as the locus of three different types of contents tourism.
