Abstract
Discusses the protection from defamation offered to Latvian public officials under the Criminal Law Art.271 and the implications for freedom of expression in the country's press. Examines the scope of the country's defamation law, the decision of the Latvian Supreme Court in Strujevics v Diena, which upheld a challenge brought by a daily newspaper and found the provisions of Art.271 unconstitutional, and the influence on the ruling of the European Convention on Human Rights 1950 Art.10. Discusses the need for further reforms and the significance for the Baltic States of the European Court of Human Rights' judgment in Vides Aizsardzibas Klubs v Latvia (57829/00).
