Abstract

The role of architectural criticism has been at the centre of strong controversies in recent years, particularly in the English-speaking context of the "Post-Criticality Debate". However, this idea that architectural theories or practices can be dispensed with or dispensed with based on critical reflection, or even that architecture itself cannot or should not be critical, has in turn provoked a virulent defense of this critical ambition and vocation. The impressive number of responses to the call for papers that led to this volume is an excellent indication of this. Indeed, the conference "Critical Tools / Les outils de la critique", organized by the NeTHCA, aimed to identify the places and conditions of current critical thinking. Participants questioned the possibility of critical practice and the nature of the tools, spaces and actors needed for architectural criticism to actually exist.
