Abstract

When voltage source converter (VSC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is connected to weak grids, the standard vector control of VSC can not ensure stability of the system with high power demand. This paper analyzed the steady state power flow characteristics of a weak grid connected VSC system. The characteristics of typical vector control was studied and validated through pole map analysis based on the small signal model of the VSC system. The mechanism of the instability of the VSC system with high power demand was explained. An improved outer loop with a feed forward branch was proposed to improve the transient reactive power response speed and increase the stability of the VSC system in front of high power demand. The proposed scheme was verified by pole map analysis and time-domain simulation results.
