Abstract

Flow cytometry was used to study starvation of Escherichia coli in artificial seawater using two membrane potential sensitive dyes and redox dye. The oxonols, DiBAC4(3) and oxonol VI, enabled assessment of energization states. Parallel use of these two dyes suggests that oxonol VI is the more useful for detection of membrane depolarization. The NADPH reducibility of 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride can be used to estimate loss of membrane integrity during survival in seawater.
