Abstract

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry has been used to determine the effect of oxygen on methanogenesis in samples from a rumen and an anaerobic digester. A membrane covered Photobacterium probe, in conjunction with the mass spectrometer, was used to measure low (> 30 nM) levels of dissolved oxygen. Methanogenesis in both systems was inhibited by dissolved oxygen concentrations below 30 nM. In samples from the rumen, oxygen inhibition of methanogenesis was fully reversible; in anaerobic digester samples short term irreversibility was observed
